 Dr. Dederich has been practicing as a specialist in periodontics since 1992. He is currently the Co-Director of the Graduate Periodontology Program and the Coordinator of the Graduate Periodontics Clinic at the University of Alberta. Dr.Dederich ran a full-time private periodontal practice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for over 6 years before assuming the position of Department Head of Periodontics at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1998 to 2005. He has also served as both Associate and acting Chair of the Department of Dentistry at the University of Alberta.

As defined by the Canadian Dental Association: Periodontics is that branch and specialty of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and conditions of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes and the maintenance of the health, function and aesthetics of these structures and tissues.

A periodontist is a dental specialist who has successfully completed an accredited advanced educational program in periodontics and currently holds such specialty designation from a Provincial Dental Regulatory Authority.


Extensive Knowledge of Periodontics and Laser Dentistry
In addition to being a specialist in the dental field of periodontics, Dr. Dederich also holds a Master's of Science and PhD in Biomedical Engineering with his research focusing on the interaction of laser energy with tissue, teeth and bone.


Contributor to Applications in Dentistry
As a scientist, Dr. Dederich has contributed significantly to the development of laser applications in dentistry. He has worked with the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs in the development of a technical report to the profession that outlines the scientific standards of evidence in the field of lasers in dentistry.


Professor at University of Alberta
Dr. Dederich currently is a full professor in the Department of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, at the University of Alberta. His clinical interests include implant, cosmetic and laser dentistry. He has served as a consultant to the United States National Institute of Health, the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Association on lasers in medicine and dentistry. He is a scientific reviewer of a number of referred dental journals including the Journal of the American Dental Association, the Journal of Dental Research and Lasers in Surgery and Medicine. He is also a past Editor of Mosby’s Yearbook of Dentistry.


Service to the Profession of Dentistry
Dr. Dederich was a member of the Council on Scientific Affairs of the American Dental association and was elected Vice-Chair of this council in 2006. He also served as the chair of the American Dental Association’s Standards Committee Working Group 6.58 on dental lasers. This group produced a technical report to the profession outlining standards of evidence for dental laser applications.


Scientific Achievements
Dr. Dederich has published over 60 articles and abstracts in refereed scientific journals and has made over 120 scientific presentations in North America and Europe. He is listed in Woodward and White’s Best Dentists in America (2004). He has also held major research funding from the US National Institutes of Health for his laser research.


Other Academic Experience
Dr. Dederich is formerly an associate professor and chairman of the Division of Biomaterials at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Alberta. He was also course director in Materials Science at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Pittsburgh and an adjunct associate professor at both the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Marquette University School of Dentistry.

Hobbies  

In his free time, Dr.Dederich enjoys spending time with his five children and the family dogs. Barbecuing all year round is a must for him and when he has the time off, he likes to plan a motorcycle trip with his son or go on a relaxing cruise. Dr.Dederich is an avid reader and enjoys playing the French Horn when he has the chance.
